The Ottawa High School wrestling team continues to make strides in several areas.
The Cyclones finished sixth Saturday in the OHS Invitational. Ottawa posted a 2-3 dual record and finished third in its pool.
Ottawa narrowly lost 36-33 to Osawatomie in the fifth-place match.
We had some good matches ... several went to overtime, Ottawa coach Joe Tokarz said. We are still trying our best to keep ourselves in matches all three periods. That showed throughout the day.
We need to develop more mat sense ... understanding proper position on mat.
Ottawa had seven wrestlers post winning marks.
Sam Carver, Caleb Parenti and Connor Gross went 4-1. Franklin Windler was 2-1. Hunter Peoples, Tristan Morris and Dalton Weidl were 3-2.
I feel like this was our first real tournament of the season ... wrestling five times in one day is tough, Tokarz said. We are learning how to be able to put that much effort out in a day to be successful.
We had great leadership from our seniors and upperclassmen.
Ottawas next competition is Jan. 5 at the Salina South Invitational.
