As we celebrate Thanksgiving Thursday, take time to meditate on the meaning of the day; acknowledge your blessings and be sensitive to the thoughts of others regarding Thanksgiving.

• T — Thanks is defined as an attitude, or an action showing gratitude or appreciation.

• H — Honor your family, friends neighbors and community by giving thanks for them and being a beacon of hope when their paths are darkened.

• A — Appreciate the freedoms we have through the privilege of living in America.

• N — Never take for granted those who have sacrificed so we can enjoy what we have today.

• K — Keep in mind the first Thanksgiving was celebrated by two very diverse cultures that came together to acknowledge the victory of harvest and friendship. That doesn’t help Aunt Sidney’s overuse of perfume or Uncle Phil’s love of Scotch, but it also doesn’t hurt.

• S — Share with those who have less.

• G — Generosity with expressions of gratitude and appreciation can improve someone’s day. Do something nice for someone every day without them knowing it.

• I — Initiate an attitude of thankfulness daily, even for your hardships because those help you become stronger.

• V — Volunteer to help an individual, an organization, a church group or a school to make something for someone better.

• I — Inspire others with encouragement, ideas, reinforcement and laughter.

• N — Note that until Abraham Lincoln declared the last Thursday in November to be a national day of Thanksgiving, the day was celebrated on different days in each state. Lincoln’s declaration was an attempt to unite the North and South in 1863.

• G — Give charitably as you have been gifted. It’s not what we say about our blessings, but how we use them.
