POMONA — It was an emotional evening Tuesday for the West Franklin High School volleyball team in Pomona.
It was senior night. This senior class has been the backbone of the program for the past four seasons. The seniors being honored were Emily Reed, McKenzie Steele, Brittany Crump and Kati Aitchison.
West Franklin split the two matches, beating Piper 26-24, 25-21 and falling to Baldwin, 25-21, 26-24.
West Franklin was up 18-9 in the first set against Piper.
“We went on a run of unforced errors which took us out of our rhythm,” West Franklin coach Angie Corwine said. “I think the emotions of senior night was weighing on our minds.”
West Franklin played from behind the whole way against Baldwin.
“We lost to a very good team and I am proud that we played hard and fought until the end,” Corwine said. “It was an emotional night and in the end we came together for our seniors.
“Our seniors played one of their best matches as a group against Baldwin. Brittany Crump had several key digs against Baldwin and had 13 digs for the night.
“Kati Aitchison continued her solid play at the net with three kills, three blocks and two digs.
“McKenzie Steele had a near perfect night on serve-receive for an average of 2.85. She also had 13 kills, three blocks and 16 digs.
“Emily Reed led us in kills and digs. She had 19 kills to go along with 19 digs and 19 assists.
West Franklin plays Saturday at the Rossville sub-state.
Bailey Whittington: 5 kills, 18 digs.
Aubry Flory: 6 kills, 5 blocks.
Macy Flory: 7 kills, 4 blocks.
Micayla Campfield: 25 assists.
