Ottawa area residents will have the opportunity to give the gift of blood this holiday season during a Christmas Eve blood drive at Ransom Memorial Hospital.

Community Blood Center, Kansas City, Mo., plans to conduct the blood drive 9 a.m. to noon Monday in the conference room at the hospital, 1301 S. Main St., Ottawa.

Every unit collected during the blood drive Monday will benefit the local community, Linda Reed, Ransom Memorial Hospital’s lab director, said.

To make an appointment online, go to www.esavealifenow.org and use sponsor code ottawacomm. Individuals also can call the Ransom Memorial Hospital lab at (785) 229-8323 to schedule an appointment.

One donation can help as many as two local hospital patients, blood center officials said.

“When individuals normally think of essential community services, they think about the fire and police departments,” Dr. Jay Menitove, executive director and medical director with Community Blood Center, said in a news release. “However, because Community Blood Center is here to meet the needs of local patients, we would hope that individuals in our community would consider us to be just as essential.”
