LINDSBORG — The Ottawa University softball team split with defending conference champion Bethany College Tuesday in Lindsborg. Ottawa fell in game one, 7-5, and earned the split with a 6-4 win in the nightcap.
Both games were decided in the seventh inning. Ottawa tied the opener at 5-5 with two runs in the top of seventh, but Bethany hit a two-run home run to win it in the bottom of the seventh.
The nightcap was knotted at 4-4 heading to the seventh inning.
Ottawa scored twice in the seventh and held Bethany scoreless for the win.
Ottawa scored three runs in the fourth of the opener to take a 3-2 lead. Bethany scored one in the fourth and two in the sixth for a 5-3 lead.
Sophomore Lydia Budke led Ottawa with two RBIs in the opener.
Morgan Beckler pitched in 5 1/3 innings.
In the nightcap, Ottawa struck with three runs in the third.
Bethany answered with four runs in the fourth.
Ottawa tied the game with single run in the sixth inning.
Amanda Martinsen, Mikayla Oliphant, and Budke had two hits.
Freshman pitcher Gabby Markham tossed two scoreless innings to earn her first collegiate victory. Morgan Shramek went the first five innings.
Ottawa (18-9, 5-3) plays 1 p.m. Saturday at home against conference leader Friends (10-0).
