POMONA — It was a night of celebration. The West Franklin High School volleyball team honored its two seniors Tuesday night in the regular-season home finale.
“It is a big deal,” West Franklin coach Angie Corwine said.
The emotions of the night added to a week break did not lead to the best night of volleyball, but the Falcons had enough to grind out two wins over Chase County (25-18, 25-17 and 25-14, 25-16).
“It felt like we had not played in awhile,” Corwine said. “We got it done. At times we lost our focus. It was hard to [concentrate] all way through.”
Seniors Shelbi Allen and Sierra Miller had good matches. Allen ran the offense and finished with 30 assists. Miller had a season-high 11 kills.
The Falcons came into the matches rested.
Corwine said West Franklin is looking forward to closing the season strong.
West Franklin (20-8, 10-4) finished third in the regular season Flint Hills League.
“Third in the league was not our goal,” Corwine said.
The Falcons suffered through some hard times early in the season, but turned things around with 18 wins in the past 20 matches.
The league tournament will be 9 a.m. Saturday in Pomona. West Franklin’s pool consists of Council Grove, Osage City and Northern Heights. The top two teams from each pool advance to the bracket play.
