IOLA — The Viking girls held a slim lead Friday night, beating the Iola Mustangs 32-31.

The on-the-road win was a tough one to secure, Scott Lane, Central Heights head coach, said, especially given that Friday was Iola’s homecoming. The team came out strong, he said, jumping to a quick 8-1 lead. The second quarter presented a few problems, but the Vikings were able to bring it together in the second half.

“The second half was a grind-it-out game, and I’m proud the girls fought and hung on at the end,” Lane said after the win.

Lane praised Brianna Erhart for her excellent play during the game, and particularly for her buzzer-beating shot.

“Brianna Erhart was a warrior tonight and hit a clutch [three-point shot] at the end that was the difference in the game,” he said.

Coming off the road win, the Vikings are set to take on Anderson County Tuesday at home.

Central Heights (32) — B. Erhart, 8; W. Kraus, 6; R. Markley, 1; S. Meyer, 14; K. Hayward, 3.

Iola (31) — L. Long, 7; K. Moore, 4; J. Lohman, 5; A. Haar, 4; E. Driska, 8; E. Sigg, 3.

WELLSVILLE — The Eagles girls squad couldn’t put together a win Friday night against Prairie View, losing 49-39 at home.

Head coach Brock Campbell didn’t make any excuses for the Wellsville team, which is now 7-10 on the season.

“We had a poor start to the game,” he said of his squad, which scored just six points in the first half. “At one point, we were 2-12 of free throws in the first half. It killed us that we weren’t able to get more points at the free-throw line.”

A dry spell from the team’s usual leading scorer, Darcy Bonzo, didn’t help the Eagles, Campbell said. Despite Erica McTaggart, a senior, hitting double digits, the team wasn’t able to overcome its deficit.

“Darcy Bonzo was leading us in points per game, but she didn’t have anything tonight. That hurt us,” he said after the game.

Wellsville is set to face Osawatomie Tuesday at home.

Wellsville (39) — McTaggart, 20, Kayhill, 8, Sparks, 8, Strawn, 2, Geist, 1.

Prairie View (49) — Diehm, 21, Madie Griffin, 7, Feldman, 7, Waterman, 7, Randall, 7, Snow, 2, Maxie Griffin, 2.
