It’s official.

Jeff Richards will be Franklin County’s new sheriff.

Gov. Sam Brownback approved Richards' appointment to the position, Lisa Johnson, Franklin County administrator and counselor, reported Tuesday afternoon. Richards was chosen Thursday by the Franklin County Republican Central Committee to succeed former Sheriff Jeff Curry, who resigned April 1 amid criminal allegations.

The new sheriff is set to be sworn in 8:30 a.m. Wednesday during the Franklin County Board of Commissioners meeting at the Franklin County Office Annex, 1418 S. Main St., Ottawa.

Richards, who was re-elected as an Ottawa city commissioner in the April 2 election, said he would resign his city position if the governor approved his nomination as sheriff.

Currently an Overland Park police detective, Richards previously said he would have to analyze how the sheriff’s office functions before making changes to the department.

“I don’t want to go in there with an agenda — that would not be fair to the men and women of the department,” he said.
