The Ottawa Recreation Commission’s board moved Wednesday to establish a modified payment plan with Ottawa’s American Legion baseball program.

Through the years, the program has cost the ORC more money than it has netted, Tommy Sink, the ORC’s director, said. As such, the board voted this week to ask the organization to pay about $2,500, or about half the program’s cost to the ORC.

“It’s not just Ottawa that has issues with maintaining losses on [providing American Legion baseball], it’s also happening in other surrounding communities,” Sink said. “In today’s world, with budgets as tight as they are, a substantial loss just doesn’t work anymore.”

Ottawa American Legion baseball features area athletes ages 15 and older, with several games at the ORC-maintained Orlis Cox Sports Complex, 106 Beech St., Ottawa.
