La CYGNE — Central Heights High School pitching staff has been lights out for most of the season.

The Vikings received two more gems Tuesday in a sweep of Prairie View in La Cygne.

Jordan Horstick went seven innings and threw 87 pitches in the Vikings’ 9-1 victory in the opener. He finished with six strikeouts and tossed a three-hitter.

“It was a cold evening and he did a nice job of fighting through the elements to give us the win,” Central Heights coach Jason Brown said.

Trever Burkdoll went six innings in the 12-1 win in the nightcap. He gave up two hits and had six strikeouts.

“He worked ahead in the count and battled through the elements as well,” Brown said. “He gave his defense opportunities to help him and they did. He was solid.

“Trae Clayton came in the seventh inning and retired all three batters he faced while striking out two of them. He came in and did exactly what we needed him to do.”

The opener was knotted at 1-1 after four innings. Central Heights scored twice in the fifth and sixth innings and four in the seventh.

Brown said the whole lineup produced offensively.

“It sure is nice knowing that you have a chance to do something no matter what part of your lineup is at the plate,” Brown said.

“We were solid again defensively, except for the first inning where we gave up the one unearned run. We were clicking on all cylinders.”        Central Heights scored six runs in the second inning of the nightcap. The Vikings then backed up the offense and pitching with some sterling defensive plays.

“We had some great defensive plays by everyone, including Jordan Horstick who went into the hole at shortstop and made a sweet back hand play,” Brown said.

“Then Trever made a bare hand play off of the mound to throw out a guy at first.

“Then Chase [Brown] made a back hand play up the middle, and then made a play on a ball that had a lot of top spin on it in the hole to his left and tossed it with his glove to Jordan Smith. Jordan Smith had some great digs at first base.”

Central Heights (9-0) plays Friday at Burlingame.
