The City of Ottawa will provide assistance to utility customers who meet certain guidelines during December, January, February and March.

Customers must meet the following guidelines to be eligible:

Provide a letter dated no earlier than Sept. 1, 2012 from the Social Security Office as proof of receipt of Supplemental Social Security or Supplemental Social Security Disability benefits.

Fill out an application for the program, which is available at City Hall, 101 S. Hickory St., Ottawa.

Currently have utility service in his or her name and have a good payment record.

The city will pay up to half of the electric bills for eligible customers during the months of the program, according to a city news release.

Customers may contact the Social Security Office at (800) 772-1213 or the Social Security Office in Lawrence at (866) 698-2561 to obtain SSI or SSDI income information.
