The City of Ottawa will provide assistance to utility customers who meet certain guidelines during December, January, February and March.
Customers must meet the following guidelines to be eligible:
• Provide a letter — dated no earlier than Sept. 1, 2012 — from the Social Security Office as proof of receipt of Supplemental Social Security or Supplemental Social Security Disability benefits.
• Fill out an application for the program, which is available at City Hall, 101 S. Hickory St., Ottawa.
• Currently have utility service in his or her name and have a good payment record.
The city will pay up to half of the electric bills for eligible customers during the months of the program, according to a city news release.
Customers may contact the Social Security Office at (800) 772-1213 or the Social Security Office in Lawrence at (866) 698-2561 to obtain SSI or SSDI income information.
