MELDA N. CUTTING

Melda N. Cutting, 101, Ottawa, Kan., died Saturday, May 4, 2013, at Vintage Park of Ottawa.

Funeral services are planned for 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 8, 2013, at Westminster Presbyterian Church. The family will meet with friends 1:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday before the service. Interment is set for Highland Cemetery, Ottawa.

She was born Monday, Feb. 5, 1912, in Waverly, Kan., the daughter of Lucien Riley and Della (Ashley) Giffin.

Melda grew up in Waverly and lived in Wichita until moving to Ottawa in 1968.

She graduated from Waverly High School with the class of 1930 and from Wichita Comptometer School in 1931.

Melda was united in marriage with Frank Sherrick March 21, 1936, in Wichita, Kan. He preceded her in death April 18, 1966.

She then married Joel M. Cutting Aug. 25, 1968 in Ottawa. He preceded her in death July 21, 1989.

Melda worked for Meadow Gold/Beatrice Foods for 25 years as a comptometer operator from 1930 to 1955.  She also worked temporarily doing inventories at Moberly West and Calvin, and later at Elmer-Fox Accounting, both of Wichita. She helped a friend in an engraving business at Ash Craft and was a counselor for Beauty Counselors of Wichita.

She was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church and the Good Sam Camping Club, both of Ottawa. She was a former member of Eastern Star Ida Leaf No. 75 and Professional Women’s Club, both of Wichita.

Survivors include two step-daughters, Ann Ackerman, Marysville, and LuAnne Debrick, Paola; six step-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Frank Sherrick; second husband, Joel Cutting; step-daughter, Joyce Basinger; parents, Riley and Della Giffin; brother, Riley Giffin Jr.; and two sisters, Maxine Jones and Leola Newton.

The family suggests memorial contributions to Westminster Presbyterian Church or Vitas Hospice through Dengel & Son Mortuary, 235 S. Hickory St., Ottawa KS 66067.
