LOUISBURG — The Ottawa High School defense has been superb through the first two games. Louisburg found some seams in the Cyclone defense.

The Wildcats had five big plays in the first half alone. It gave Louisburg a 21-9 victory.

Louisburg broke Ottawa’s back with a 99-yard drive at the end of the half to give them a 21-3 halftime lead. Louisburg had back-to-back 24-yard pass plays on the drive.

Ottawa gave up a 33-yard touchdown run and a 41-yard run that helped set up another score in the first half.

“We could not stop them,” Ottawa coach Rob Hedrick said. “We did not make the plays tonight. They are a good football team. They do things really well. They don’t do anything fancy. We didn’t handle it very well.”

The second half saw the Wildcats chew up long drives, but Ottawa held strong and forced turnovers. Ottawa recovered four fumbles and intercepted two passes.

“We forced turnovers again,” Hedrick said. “We might be leading the state in turnovers forced. We will find some good things. It is frustrating.”

Louisburg’s drives limited Ottawa to 10 offensive plays in the second half.

“That is what they do,” Hedrick said. “They owned the second half with time of possession. We had so many individual mental mistakes.

“It is kids not being sharp. We did not make them go our way.”

The one good play in the second half was a 97-yard interception return for a score by Andre Lewis with 3:42 remaining in the game.

“It was nice,” Hedrick said. “I am glad we defended it. That is what we envision every time he touches the ball from the backfield. It was pretty. It was exciting. The kids are not giving up. We played the whole game. We talk about mental toughness.”

The Ottawa offense mustered 100 yards of total offense and 39 of that came on the first play from scrimmage on a pass play.

“I don’t know what is wrong with our offense,” Hedrick said. “We have to watch film and see what is happening. Why we can’t move the ball. We will put in the time and get it fixed.”

Ottawa (2-1) plays Friday at home against St. James.
