Law enforcement officials were searching this week for a suspect, as well as a passenger in the suspect’s vehicle, after a reported Monday night kidnapping, aggravated battery and domestic battery incident in Ottawa.
Capt. Adam Weingartner, with the Ottawa Police Department, said police have been in contact with the suspect, but the person has not yet been arrested. He said the suspect spoke with officials on the phone, and the police asked the suspect to come in for questioning about the incident.
Ottawa police responded about 7:44 p.m. Monday near the intersection of East Sixth and Burroughs streets, Acres Estates Mobile Home Park, Ottawa, to a report of a person seriously injured after being struck by a vehicle, according to a police report. A 35-year-old Ottawa man was treated by emergency workers at the scene and then transported to Overland Park Regional Medical Center, according to police.
The motorist suspected to be driving the vehicle that struck the man fled the scene. A 37-year-old Quenemo woman had been forced into the vehicle by the suspect, Weingartner said, but she was able to escape the vehicle uninjured and return to the scene of the incident. The suspect and another passenger remain at large.
Police have identified the suspect and the passenger, Weingartner said, and the suspect’s vehicle was recovered unoccupied overnight Monday. The incident has been classified as a domestic violence case, he said. The names of the suspect and passenger had not been released Wednesday afternoon.
“It was part of a domestic-related incident,” Weingartner said. “There was a domestic argument that occurred, in the course of that, the vehicle driven by the suspect struck [the 35-year-old Ottawa man].”
The case remains under investigation. Police are asking anyone with information about the incident to call the police department at (785) 242-2561 (administration line), (785) 242-1700 (dispatch) or Franklin County Crime Stoppers at (888) 311-TIPS.
