CELEBRATING HERITAGE

What is this? The Herald's annual Progress editions usually focus primarily on the state of local business and industry. This year, though, as Kansas marks its 150th birthday, we look more toward history and trivia. Our goal: to honor the rich heritage of Ottawa and Franklin County. Knowing that most people aren't big fans of dry, "boring" history, The Herald is using its Progress editions this year to bring readers a collection of entertaining, often-times little-known stories of the area's past. What this isn't: A complete history of Ottawa and Franklin County. There are more stories out there. And they deserve to be told. But the celebration of Ottawa's and Franklin County's path from their wild and woolly days to today's modern world begins here. There's a lot of ground to cover, so enjoy the ride.
