HARRIS: Keep the welcome mat clean

Older cities, like Ottawa, have some interesting characteristics not found in modern cities. Adjusting to Ottawa after having lived in large metropolitan areas and later, in a rural, mountainous setting, has meant, among other things, rediscovering the value of alleys. In my particular case, finding I had an alley was not a matter of happenstance, but rather of necessity.   

On Aug. 9, we arrived to what eventually would become home and discovered we already had mail — a certified, registered letter from the City of Ottawa.
