OU men’s soccer signs Lansing forward

The Ottawa University men’s soccer program has announced the signing of Lansing High School senior for the 2008 season.

Thackston, a forward, earned two letters in wrestling and soccer for the Lions. As a freshman, he was one of the top 12 wrestlers in the state of Kansas at his weight.

On the soccer field this past fall, he was voted All-Kaw Valley Honorable Mention. Thackston was second in the league in goals scored with 11, led the league in shots on goal and scored three game winning goals for the Lions.

“Chance is a tall, strong and fit forward who will bring a great desire to succeed as a college soccer player. It these qualities that excite me about Chance’s time at OU as we are looking to build a program around players with a great will to succeed,” Ottawa coach Bob Casper said. “He will add athleticism and size which is much needed up front for us, and being a four-year player will give him ample time to adjust to our system and our league. Overall, I’m very happy to have Chance on board and I’m excited to see how much he and his teammates can accomplish while at OU.”

 Thackston plans major in business.

Officers to ticket vestless riders

Ride in a boat, have a life vest. That’s the law, the Kansas Wildlife and Parks reminds boaters. Wildlife and Parks officers will crack down on violators,

“Our sole purpose is to reduce the increasing trend of fatalities on our waters and create a safer atmosphere for those individuals taking advantage of our great recreational boating opportunities,” Dan Hesket, assistant director of the Law Enforcement Division, said.

Officers will make of point of inspecting boats, and if necessary, issuing citations for violations, he said.

Under state law, each vessel must be equipped with a proper life jacket, also known as a “personal flotation device,” for each person on board the vessel.

These life jackets must be “accessible:” in open view and not be stowed in locked or closed compartments.

or be inside plastic or other packaging material.

Children under the age of 13 and any one on a personal watercraft are required to wear the proper life jackets while on board.

The most common violation is for life jackets not being accessible on a vessel, Hesket said.

During the 2006 boating season, 90 percent of those who drowned in Kansas waters were not wearing a life jacket, he said. Thate means 423 lives were needlessly lost, he said.

Kansas statistics have shown a greater increase over the years of boating-related fatalities, mostly from drowning, he said.
