Falcons fall twice to Council Grove

COUNCIL GROVE — The West Franklin High School baseball team fell twice Friday to Council Grove by identical 5-3 scores.

“We hit the ball hard we just couldn’t find any holes. They made some nice plays,” West Franklin coach Ian Evans said.

Bryant Harmon was the losing pitcher in game one and Chris Robertson took the loss in  relief in the second game.

“We were a couple of plays away from winning both games,” Evans said

Cody Miller had three RBI’s.

West Franklin plays Tuesday at home against Burlington and Thursday against Osage City.



OHS doubles team falls in sub-state


INDEPENDENCE — Ottawa High School doubles squad of Austin Hasty and Braden Ward lost to Parsons Friday 6-4, 7-5 in the first round of 4A sub-state in Independence.

The squad finished second Thursday in the regional to advance to sub-state.

OU baseball bows out of tourney

LINDSBORG — The Ottawa University baseball season ended Friday with an 18-7 loss to Saint Mary in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament in Lindsborg.

Ottawa stayed alive with a 17-16 win over Sterling.

Ottawa had 11 hits and was led by Joe Summers’ four hits against Saint Mary. Travis Persinger added three hits.

The first game was an offensive explosion. Ottawa rallied from a 13-7 deficit at the end of the fifth inning.

Ottawa had 17 hits, led by Persinger with four and five RBIs. Summers and Tommy King each added three hits.

OU softball nipped in tourney

SALINA — The Ottawa University softball team came within an out Friday of advancing to the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament title game.

Kansas Wesleyan scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh to nip Ottawa, 5-4. Ottawa advanced to the semifinal game with a 12-4 win over Bethany in six innings.

The loss was a tough one with Ottawa leading 4-1 heading into the seventh. A bases-loaded hit sent Ottawa packing.

Ottawa scored three runs in the first inning on two-run double by Sharee Joyner and Lori Ewalt’s RBI single. Kelly Higbie hit a home run to left to give Ottawa a 4-0 lead in the sixth inning.

Ottawa put Bethany away early with seven runs in the first two innings and two in the sixth. Ottawa capitalized on five Bethany errors.

Jamie Miller led the Lady Braves with three hits, while three others had two hits each.

Ashley Mundy had four RBI’s with a double and a home run and Sharee Joyner drove in three, also with a double and a home run.
