OU track earns postseason honors

McPHERSON — The Ottawa University track squads have made their mark on and off the track.

This past weekend, 17 OU track athletes earned all-conference honors by placing in the top six in their events at McPherson.

Ottawa also had 11 NAIA Academic All-Americans.

“This was a strong performance from the OU track and field team,” Ottawa coach Kirk Wren said. “The student athletes represented the university with high standards and work ethic.”

The men finished fourth with 63 points and the women were sixth with 44.5 points.

Ottawa garnered three individual Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference champions.

Freshman Clarence Anderson, running with a sore leg, won the 400- and 200-meter races. He qualified for the nationals in the 400.

“This is a remarkable accomplishment,” Wren said.

Senior Justin Garrard won the 5,000 race to qualify for nationals and lower his school record time.

“It was the most exciting 5,000 race I’ve seen in 20 years,” Wren said. “He ran a 60-second last lap to take control of the race.”

In a matter of minutes, he returned to the track to finish fourth in the 10,000 race. He completed 37.5 laps around the track in 40 minutes.

He was also third in the 3,000 steeplechase.

Sophomore Kylie Covey was a KCAC champion in the 100. She also took third in the 200 and ran on two relays that placed in the top five.
