OU grad killed in Iraq

By The Herald Staff

A Colorado Marine who was a former student at Ottawa University was killed in Iraq Friday.

Sgt. Glen Martinez, 31, was one of four Marines killed by a roadside bomb in Fallujah.

Martinez, who grew up in Monte Vista, Colo., was buried at the neighboring Colorado State Veterans Center cemetery, Homelake, according to a Colorado newspaper.

According to OU, he was a student from 1995 until his graduation in 2000. He majored in math and land surveying.

He played and lettered in baseball at OU and was president of the math club, an OU official said.

“He will be missed by many of us who shared our college days with him,” Katie McDonald, a college classmate, said. “I hope that someone starts a scholarship in his memory.”

Martinez joined the Marines in October 2004 and was on his second deployment to Iraq.

Survivors include his wife Melissa Sue, also a Marine sergeant serving in Iraq; parents, Ron and Carol Martinez, his grandparents and a sister.
