OU baseball adds 2 players

The Ottawa University baseball team added two players to the 2009-2010 squad. The Braves signed tranfer Spenser Augustine, who played for College of Du Page, Ill. last season. Ottawa also signed Iola High School’s Mark Bristol.

Augustine will play the middle infield for the Braves after starting two years at shortstop for the Chaparrals. Ottawa coach Joe Reed expects Augustine to provide leadership in the program.

Bristol was a pitcher and outfielder for Iola. He earned all-league honors as a senior.

“Mark is a competitor both on the mound and in the outfield. He is another left-handed pitcher that will complement our pitching staff well,” Reed said. “Mark displays a solid understanding of the game and will push everyone around him to be better. He will look to come in and compete for our program and will strive to outwork anyone else.”

Montgomery was a regional champion and finished 27th in the 3A state golf tournament in May.

Douglas finished second in the 4A regional and 26th in the 4A state tourney.

“I am very excited about both of these young men joining our program. Chris and Brandon are both solid students and unselfish team players who happen to be good golfers,” said OU head coach Wendell Smith. “They share a common hunger to improve on a daily basis on the course, in the classroom and in life. They have demonstrated their ability to find balance between athletics and academics, and are both well-rounded student athletes.
