LIBRARY LINE: It’s the season of creativity

By LISA SLAVIN, Library Line

“Be creative” — that is the theme for adult summer reading at the Ottawa Library this year.

More than 100 patrons have signed up for the adult summer reading program and the number keeps growing. It’s not too late to participate. For every book you read or audio book you listen to, you may fill out a book coupon and drop it in the “paint bucket” at the circulation desk. Each week, I draw two winners from the bucket for prizes.

We enjoyed Randy Endicott’s recent program about his art and his struggles with colorblindness. It was interesting and entertaining. Endicott is an artist with the Ottawa Art Guild. You can check out his beautiful paintings when he shows his art locally with the guild.

We will feature “Cards for Heroes” at 6 p.m. next Monday at the library. Tracy Wade and Jan Davis of Paper Haven will be on hand to help create cards, which will then be sent to our troops overseas for their use. Come in and make as many cards as you please. Bring your friends. And don’t forget to check out the Web site www.cardsforheroes.org for ideas and more information about the program. The session will be in Room 104 (upstairs) and is free and open to the public.

Another Ottawa Art Guild member, Bob Marsh, will be our guest, along with other artists, at the library at 6:30 p.m. July 6. Marsh plans to lead a program called “Being Creative” and artwork from the artists will be shown along with a presentation and explanation of how they become inspired to do their art. A question and answer session will follow. Join us for an evening of art appreciation and become inspired to do something creative on your own. The session will be in Room 104 (upstairs) and is free and open to the public.

Have you ever wanted to create your own videos? Do you have questions about what to do with your videos once you have made them? Do you need to learn how to upload videos onto the Internet? Gordon  Billingsley, Elliot Sutherland and Brian Williams from The Ottawa Herald have offered to be at the library from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. July 13 to help you create your own videos and post them on the Web. The Herald will provide online space to upload videos onto the newspaper’s Web site for all to see. Bring your cameras and video recorders, if you have them. The session will be in Room 104 (upstairs) and is free and open to the public.

We will have a “Fun Food and Folk Music” celebration July 26 at the library for our summer readers. You can nibble on appetizers, talk about the books you’ve read and listen to music from Larry and Audrey Lintner and friends. Bring one coupon with you to the party and you could win a great prize that afternoon.

Enjoy the summer weather while reading. And be sure to visit us at the library for our great seasonal programs.

Lisa Slavin is an adult programming librarian at the Ottawa Library.
