Today in Ottawa History - July 2, 1959

July 2, 1959

•A new record went on the Ottawa weather books this morning when the temperature dropped to 50 degrees, making it the lowest temperature ever recorded here on July 2.

•It wasn’t money, but firecrackers that burned a hole in a 12-year-old Gary Hall’s pocket, and sent him to the hospital.  The boy had 50 cents worth of firecrackers in his right pocket. The youth doesn’t know why the “big bunch” of firecrackers in his pocket went off, but he surmises that a punk he was using fell into his pocket.  His physician said the boy has second degree burns and was suffering from shock when he was brought to the hospital. “Hall will be alright though,” the doctor said, and is resting comfortably.
