Ottawa Legion A buries Garnett twice

GARNETT — The Ottawa American Legion A baseball team put together one of its better doubleheaders of the season Wednesday in Garnett.

The Ottawa squad rolled to a sweep of Garnett, winning 11-0 and 12-2.

“Much more impressed with the way we finished the games tonight,” Ottawa coach Brian Long said. “We got up early in the first game and just buried them from the start.”

The Ottawa pitchers pitched out of jams and the defense played solid with just one error in the games.

Evan Moore tossed a complete game one-hitter in the first game. Kevin Farrell gave up five hits in the second game.

“Evan through a lot better tonight than he did on Saturday. He got in trouble early with a couple of walks but zeroed in and got out of it,” Long said. “His control gets him in jams but tonight he did a great job of overcoming that. We need him to be huge like that every game.

“Farrell is turning into a real solid starter for us. He gave up three straight hits to start the game and then settled down. Both pitchers need to stay in a positive groove and they helped out the team offensively by having the big shut down innings when we needed it.

“We only had one error on the night which is significantly better.”

Jake Huddlestun smacked a two-run home run in the first game. Moore, Huddlestun, Gene Dydell and Dalton Laird scored twice.

“Huddlestun’s shot really made the lead insurmountable but we didn’t let it effect our approach,” Long said. “I was very happy with the way we attacked from the beginning and didn’t let them have a chance to even be in the game.

“In both games we had great situational hitting and had great approaches at the plate. Ryan Maxwell had a great hit-and-run with Laird on, who also laid down a sacrifice bunt. Those little things win us ball games.”

Ottawa ran the bases aggressively with 10 stolen bases. Maxwell had three steals. Ottawa also took advantage of nine walks. Fritts had two hits.

Ottawa ended the second game with a double play. Fritts caught a fly ball and gunned down a runner trying to score from third. Maxwell held on to the throw, despite being bowled over by the runner.

“Adam Fritts is throwing the ball extremely well from the outfield. I think that’s his fifth outfield assist in 15 games, which is phenomenal,” Long said.

Ottawa (8-7) plays tonight at Mound City.
