LIBRARY LINE: Pick your horse (or book)

By LISA FARRAR-WELLMAN, Library Line

I’m a slow learner. Have I ever mentioned that? Well, it’s true.

For years, people have praised Dick Francis novels and I always ignored their recommendation and chose something else to read.

Every single one of his books has a racehorse on the front of it. I can practically hear you saying, “Now, Lisa. Never judge a book by its cover.” I can’t help it. Horse racing? Really?

It took a fellow librarian to change my mind. She pressed “In the Frame” into my resisting hands. The book sat on my nightstand for six months or so.

Then in June, I ran out of things to read. It was completely careless of me and I still can’t believe I let it happen. I always keep a stack of books by my bed.

In a panic, I rifled through parenting magazines, devotionals and a book on green living. There on the bottom of the pile was the Dick Francis novel. Danny offered me a science fiction book to read instead. Yeah, right. I chose horses, obviously.

And I’m so glad I did. I’m now slurping up Dick Francis books like there’s no tomorrow.

Join me, won’t you? There are 6.5 million of these books, I swear. You will read for eons and not run out of material.

These mysteries are well written, engaging and full of characters that seem like your good friends when you finally put the book down.

Another thing I sincerely appreciate is that Dick Francis doesn’t throw in tons of swearing or vomit-inducing love scenes.

Lastly, (and grudgingly admitted) the horse racing is pretty darn fascinating. The author gives just enough detail so you understand what’s happening but not so much that worthless trivia pours out of your ears.

Don’t be a slow learner like yours truly. Just trust me.

Come to Ottawa Library, close your eyes and pull a Dick Francis book off the shelf. You can’t go wrong.

Lisa Farrar Wellman is a librarian at the Ottawa Library.
