Cyclone soccer team looking forward to rematch

Grit and heart

By Greg Mast/Herald Sports Editor

Not much separated Spring Hill and Ottawa high school soccer teams Thursday in the regular-season finale in Ottawa.

The Cyclones fought back from a 2-0 deficit to tie the match early in the second half, but the Broncos notched one more goal with 15 minutes left for a 3-2 win over Ottawa on senior night.

The loss sent Ottawa to 7-9 and the win improved Spring Hill to 9-7. It appears the two teams will play again Tuesday in the first round of regional in Spring Hill.

“It was another one that got away,” Ottawa coach Glen Cahill said. “We got down 2-0 ... I felt like we would pull some goals back.”

Cahill figures Ottawa will see the Broncos again.

“We have to press on from here,” he said. “[Hopefully] we get to return the favor at their house.”

Ottawa displayed the heart and passion that the Cyclones have played with all season.

The Cyclones have been decimated by injuries and other maladies all season.

“I love the character of these guys,” Cahill said. “They have been through a lot of adversity this year. They would not give up.”

Cahill continues to mix up the systems to give Ottawa more power up front, but it weakens other areas on the field.

“We played with more heart ... no quit,” Cahill said. “It was a collective effort.”

The match was played in less than ideal conditions. It was a cold and misty night.

“It is tough conditions to play in,” Cahill said.

The coach said the wet ground made legs get tired as Ottawa was playing its third match in four days.

Spring Hill quickly jumped on Ottawa with two goals — less than a minute apart — six minutes into the contest.

Midway through the first half, Ottawa began to control the action and found the back of the net with seven minutes left.

David Wilson’s pass set up Schuyler Foulke for the Cyclones’ first goal of the match. It pulled Ottawa within 2-1.

It stayed that way until early in the second half when juniors Adam Hazen and Wilson hooked up.

Hazen got the ball to Wilson, who popped in the equalizer with 32 minutes left.

“For a while we had them on their heels,” Cahill said.

The coach said a few things need to be shored up before Tuesday.

“We are playing the ball into pressure too much,” he said. “At different times, we have trouble getting the ball out of the back.”
