Wait nearly over for Central Heights volleyball

The Central Heights High School volleyball team has been pointing toward Saturday since losing last year in the sub-state final.

The Vikings came up short in 2008 of attaining a state tourney trip.

Central Heights is back as the top seed in the 3A sub-state in Wellsville.

The Vikings, who are ranked fifth in the 3A coaches poll, are rolling into the tourney with a 33-4 record. Central Heights plays at 2 p.m. against eighth-seeded Maur Hill Prep (5-28).

West Franklin received the fourth seed with its 24-8 mark and will play fifth-seeded K.C. Christian (23-13) following the CH-Maur Hill Prep match.

The winners meet in the semifinals.

The other half of the bracket has second-seeded Osage City (31-6) squaring off against seventh-seeded Wellsville (15-20) at 2 p.m.

No. 3 Jeff North (29-9) plays No. 6 McLouth. The winners advance.

Ottawa (16-20) heads into sub-state at Spring Hill, winning five of its past six matches. The Cyclones are the fifth seed in the 4A tourney and will play No. 4 Eudora (16-18) at around 3 p.m.

Top-seeded Spring Hill (27-12) plays No. 8 Baldwin (6-26) at 2 p.m. The winners meet in the semifinals.

The other bracket has No. 2 Paola (25-12) playing De Soto (12-22) at 2 p.m. followed by No. 3 Louisburg vs. No. 6 Santa Fe Trail. Those two winners meet in the semifinals.

Anderson County is the top seed in the Iola sub-state. AC (34-2) plays No. 8 Prairie View (7-24) at 2 p.m.

No. 4 El Dorado (13-22) plays No. 5 Augusta in the next match. The winners advance to the semifinals.

No. 2 Rose Hill (28-7) plays No. 7 Osawatomie (8-21) at 2 p.m. followed by No. 3 Circle (25-13) vs. Iola (9-23). The winners meet in the semifinals.

Regional CC

The OHS cross-country runners will be familiar with the course and many of the teams in its 4A regional at Wyandotte County Park.

This will be the third time the Cyclones have competed on that course this season.

The girls race begins at 3:30 p.m. with the boys at 4:30 p.m.

The top three teams and five individuals not on those qualifying teams advance to state in Wamego.

The field at Wyandotte consists of Baldwin, Basehor-Linwood, De Soto, Eudora, Bishop Ward, Piper, Sumner Academy, Prairie View, St. James, Louisburg, Osawatomie, Ottawa, Paola, Spring Hill and Tonganoxie.

Anderson County, coming off a strong performance in the Pioneer League race, competes at El Dorado Lake. The girls race is at 2 p.m. followed by the boys.

The field consists of Labette County, Augusta, Chanute, El Dorado, Fort Scott, Anderson County, Girard, Independence, Iola, Mulvane, Parsons, Rose Hill, Circle, Valley Center and Wichita Trinity.

Central Heights, Wellsville and West Franklin will compete at Burlington. The girls race at 2 p.m. followed by the boys.

Other schools include Northeast Arma, Baxter Springs, Burlington, Caney Valley, Southeast of Cherokee, Erie, Eureka, Fredonia, Frontenac, Neodesha, Osage City and K.C. Christian.
