WOOD: Spooky weekend ahead

By AMBER WOOD, What's Going On

This weekend is sure to give you plenty of haunts in the area, so let’s get started.

It’s more than Ozzy’s Crazy Train — it’s the Terror Train. This weekend marks the beginning of the Terror Train Rides by the Midland Railway. Board the train in Baldwin City and take a trip on train cars haunted by goblins and other crazies. The fright level increases as the night goes on. If you have small kids, you might want to take them earlier. The trains depart at 6:30 p.m., 8 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. Tickets go on sale at 5:30 each night.

No advance tickets or reservations are available. The depot is at 1515 W. High St. in Baldwin City. The train will run today and Saturday and Oct. 29  and Oct. 30. There will be food available at the depot each evening. Adult tickets are $12. Tickets for those 12 and younger are $6. Call the Midland Railway office at (913) 721-1211 with questions.

If you’re looking for a frightful time full of thrills, head to Worlds of Fun for its Halloween Haunt. The park will be open weekends through Halloween and will include haunting experiences at night. Tickets are $40.99 (save $5 online) for an all-day pass, $18.99 for juniors (48 inches and shorter) and seniors (62 and older) or come just for Fright Night (after 6 p.m. Friday and after 4 p.m. Saturday) for $26.99. Visit them online at www.worldsoffun.com or call (816) 454-4545.

Take a trip to the most haunted town in Kansas — Atchison. Trolley tours are $13 a person. You also can take a history mystery walking tour. On this tour, those lured by the haunted history are taken on a 20-block tour of historic Victorian architectural delights.

Saturday, explore “Awakening What Lies Within” with clairvoyant Glennie Lee Turner at 2 p.m. at the Haunted (of course) Theater. Tickets are $25 each. On-site investigations will continue to Sallie’s house from 8:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. Saturday. Experienced paranormal investigators will lead those brave and curious souls with $65 for a ticket through the home and challenge you to prove or disprove the paranormal. You also can tour the home for $10 without the paranormal experience between 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. Saturday and Oct. 31.

For a complete list of Haunted Atchison activities, visit www.atchisonkansas.net or call (800) 234-1854.

Want some Halloween fun that won’t scare the youngest ghouls? Try Boo at the Zoo 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The kids can trick-or-treat, visit the Boneville Graveyard, watch “spooky” animals and get photos taken. This annual event will not scare the kids and is aimed at family fun. Costume parades are planned for 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Regular zoo admission is charged for zoo exhibits and the spooky family fun. Visit them online at www.kansascityzoo.org or call (816) 513-5800.

If you enjoy getting the whatever scared out of you, there always are the haunted houses. There’s The Beast, The Edge of Hell, Macabre Cinema and Chamber of Poe Haunted Houses all in the West Bottoms in Kansas City. They will be open Friday and Saturday nights. For more information, call (816) 842-0320.

The event is free and is a faith-based event sponsored by the First Baptist Church. There will be hot dogs, fruit, chips, beverages, stories, games, crafts, treats-go-round and raffle prizes.

The meal, between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m., features homemade noodles and the church’s famous cole slaw. Everyone is welcome. The price for adults is $6.75 and for kids 12 and younger, $3.50.

The Ottawa University orchestra will have a fall concert at 3 p.m. Sunday  in the University Chapel 1001 S. Cedar St. in Ottawa. The orchestra is comprised of students, staff and faculty of the college, community members, teachers from Suzuki Strings and guests. The program is free and open to the public.

If you’re still hungry when the weekend’s over, come to the chili and soup supper 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Nov. 3. at the Pomona United Methodist Church, 336 E. A St. There will be a free-will donation. Call Gary at (785) 566-3880 with questions.
