Spring Hill nips Ottawa in soccer regional

PK phase

SPRING HILL — For the second straight year, Ottawa High School’s first-round regional soccer match was settled by penalty kicks.

Last year, Ottawa defeated Paola to advance to the regional championship match.

The Cyclones and Spring Hill even went into extra kicks to settle their regional match Tuesday in Spring Hill.

The Broncos made all seven penalty kicks, while Ottawa missed its seventh and it ended Ottawa’s season.

The score was tied 4-4 at the end of regulation. Ottawa scored two goals in the final 10:30 to tie the match. The two teams battled through two scoreless 10-minute periods and two five-minute overtimes for a total of 110 minutes.

It came down to penalty kicks — one on one with the keeper.

Shooters — one by one — stepped up and made their shots.

After the first five, a new set of five went to the center of the field to take their turns.

Except this time, the first one to miss and the other make would end the match.

“Unfortunately it was us,” Ottawa coach Glen Cahill said. “We missed that last one.”

There was not much difference between the two Frontier League rivals that were the fourth and fifth seeds. Spring Hill nipped Ottawa 3-2 Thursday to gain the home pitch advantage for the regional contest.

It went back and forth.

Spring Hill scored first with just under 25 minutes left in the first half. Ottawa senior Braden Ward curled in a corner kick with 20 minutes remaining to tie the match at 1-1.

The Broncos took a 2-1 lead with 35 seconds left in the first half. Spring Hill scored early in the second half to forge a 3-1 lead.

Adam Hazen scored the first of his two goals to make it 3-2 with 18:36 left in regulation.

The Broncos slipped in a goal with 10:37 remaining for a 4-2 lead.

Less than a minute later, Hazen notched his second goal to close the gap to 4-3.

Ottawa kept pressuring the Broncos and finally found the opening. Ward sent a ball to David Wilson, who scored to tie the match at 4-4.

“We came back and took it to PKs,” Cahill said. “Our guys were fit.”

The coach said Ottawa left everything on the field.

“They showed a lot of heart,” Cahill said. “I am disappointed for them.

“They played through so much adversity.”

Ottawa finished with a 7-10 record.
