OU student to speak on experiences working as Red Cross intern

By The Herald Staff

An Ottawa University student will share her internship experiences with the local American Red Cross chapter Tuesday at a luncheon on the Ottawa University campus.

The luncheon will be 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Mowbray Student Union. Laura Reed, a junior at OU, will speak on how her internship with the Kansas City, Kan., Red Cross office this summer relates to her education and career plans.

Jason Williby, executive director of the local American Red Cross chapter, said Reed’s internship focused on marketing and communications, which are programs she’s studying at OU. The local Red Cross chapter covers Anderson, Franklin, Linn, Miami and Wyandotte counties and encourages students from surrounding colleges and universities to apply for internships in hopes of providing them with skills that give them a greater advantage in the job market upon graduation.

Williby said all interns work in conjunction with the Kansas City, Kan., office but specific duties during the internship depend on their field of study and personal interests.

Each intern does a wrap-up interview for the public to showcase what he or she has learned, Williby said, and he’s hoping for a good turnout at Reed’s presentation.

“We’d love to have a crowd,” he said.

Lunch is free, and the public is welcome. RSVP to willibyj@usa.redcross.org. College students interested in internship opportunities with the local Red Cross chapter can visit the Web site www.kck.redcross.org or call (913) 321-6314.
