WOOD: Let’s salute their service

By AMBER WOOD, What's Going On

This weekend pay tribute to veterans.

Veterans Day observations begin at 6 p.m. today with the Healing Field of Flags, with more than 700 flags, as part of an opening ceremony at Ottawa’s Forest Park, 320 N. Locust St.

Saturday morning the events continue with many events, highlighted by the Veterans Day parade from Fifth and Main streets to Forest Park and a special service at the War Memorial.

Then, it’s on to the park, where the popular World War II re-enactment will be at 1:15 p.m., followed at 2:15 p.m. by a Civil War firing demonstration. More programs, including music, follow that.

Don’t miss out Sunday. A “Time of Reflection” will be at 6 p.m., followed at 7 p.m. with another tour of the Healing Field of Flags. At 6 p.m. Monday, a Hands of Glory/Gospel program will be followed by a tour of the Healing Field of Flags.

Wednesday will mark the closing ceremonies, with music by the Central Heights Choir. Questions on Veterans Day events, call Harold Mayes at (785) 242-5419.

“This is your Grandad’s music” so get your ticket to Phantoms of the Opry at the Ottawa Municipal Auditorium Saturday night to hear it. The band really can get you up on your feet. There will be special space for those wishing to cut a rug.

This local band will be playing at 7 p.m., with proceeds benefiting the Bea Martin Peck Animal Shelter. Get out to support local talent and the animal shelter. Tickets are available for $13.50 at the OMA, Country Mart and Cottonwood Animal Hospital. The first 100 veterans to come in uniform get in free. Questions: Call Kimberley at (785) 242-6492.

Also this weekend, a cabaret show will feature songs from various musicals, plays and movies at the Larry D. Peters Auditorium at Ottawa University. The show will be 8 p.m. today and Saturday. Tickets for the show are $10 for adults; $8 for children, students and senior citizens. Faculty, staff and OU students get free admission with an ID. The show will feature nine local talents.

If you haven’t been to the Ottawa Arts Guild Member Show featuring “Country Roads and Paths,” be sure to head to the Carnegie Cultural Center, 515 S. Main St., 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. This will be the last of two weekends at the Carnegie. The show will close Nov. 15. The art show is free to the public for viewing and features work from local artists and art available for purchase.

You may be familiar with the story/movie “The Shawshank Redemption,” but did you ever wonder how real the scenario of Andy Dufrense could be? Well, not the breaking out of jail part, but the wrongful imprisoning part.

Next Thursday Darryl Burton will be speaking at Ottawa University in the chapel at 1001 S. Cedar St. Burton was wrongfully imprisoned for 24 years until his conviction was overturned in 2008. He now lives in Kansas City and travels around the country to tell his story firsthand. Call (785) 242-5200 with questions.
