Principal says he’s leaving job, switching careers

By COURTNEY SERVAES, Herald Staff Writer

Within the Central Heights School District, there are teachers who can’t sleep because they are concerned about students.

Teachers who buy clothes for students in need.

Teachers who work themselves sick over state assessments.

That’s what Luis Hinojosa, Central Heights Elementary School principal, said he’ll miss most — the people, the dedication.

Hinojosa, who submitted his resignation to Central Heights School Board members Tuesday, said he spent Friday — his final day as principal — with the people he would miss most.

“The most difficult thing to leave here will be the students,” Hinojosa, who has spent four years with the district, said. “I will certainly miss everyone.”

Hinojosa said he will be taking a job with a financial firm in either St. Louis, Mo., or Kansas City, after a college friend presented him with an opportunity to switch careers.

“Sometimes opportunities come out of nowhere, and you are forced to make a decision,” Hinojosa said. “Unfortunately, mine came during the school year. It will be a change, but it will be a much-needed change for me.”

Superintendent Jim Reece said Hinojosa will be greatly missed by both students and faculty.

“When I first came to Mr. Reece with my letter of resignation, he gave it back to me and told me to think about it,” Hinojosa said. “I laughed because I didn’t expect that to happen.”

During Hinojosa’s last day as principal, the elementary student council members presented him with a card of appreciation.

“Joking around with the students at the elementary school is something I will always remember about CHES,” he said. “I love hearing students’ laughter. If they are laughing, they are having fun.”
