OU basketball teams split games

FAYETTE, Mo. — Central Methodist University sent the Ottawa University men’s basketball team to its second loss of the young season Friday night in the first game of the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference and Heart of America Classic in Fayette, Mo.

The Braves fell 72-57.

Central Missouri ran out to a 41-29 halftime lead.

Ottawa was outscored 31-28 in the second half.

Ottawa shot 43 percent from the field, but was just one of eight from behind the 3-point arc.

The Braves were plagued by 20 turnovers. Ottawa did win the boards battle, 36-27.

Junior Chris Tate paced Ottawa with 13 points on six of 14 from the field.

Freshman Corey Smith finished with 11 points and seven rebounds. He shot fiveof eight from the field.

Jake Carter also grabbed seven rebounds.

Ottawa (0-2) plays 1 p.m. today against Baker in Fayette, Mo.

Ottawa 67, Hillsdale 46

WICHITA — The Ottawa University women’s basketball team notched its first victory of the season Friday with a 67-46 win over Hillsdale Freewill Baptist in the Friends Classic.

The Lady Braves had two players in double figure scoring led by Paige Gibson’s 16 points on six-of-13 shooting.

Junior sharpshooter Maggie Hasenkamp had 12 points on four treys.

Ottawa was on fire from behind the arc, hitting 13-of-26 for 50 percent from behind the 3-point line.

Ottawa also dominated the paint, 25-8 and had a 43-32 advantage in rebounding.

Ottawa (1-1) plays 2 p.m. today against Central Methodist, which topped Friends, 71-63 in overtime.
