Braves top Bethany, capture share of KCAC title

By The Herald Staff

Senior Day turned into a celebration for the Ottawa University football team Saturday at Peoples Bank Field.

The No. 7 Braves wrapped up at least a share of the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference championship with a 41-14 win over Bethany in the final regular season home game of the season.

Ottawa improved to 9-0 and is the first team since 1965 to win its first nine games of the season.

The Braves are in line to be the first team in program history to be 10-0 and be the fourth team in school history to complete an undefeated season. To do that Ottawa must defeat Friends next Saturday in Wichita.

Ottawa rolled up 533 yards of offense, gaining 177 on the ground and 356 in the air, in the win over Bethany.

Senior Andy Otto finished with a season-best 145 yards on 18 carries and scored a 59-yard touchdown in the third quarter.

Receivers Corey Schultz and Clarence Anderson became the third and fourth Braves to eclipse the 1,000-yard receiving mark in a season.

Anderson passed that plateau with a 58-yard touchdown catch in the third quarter. The sophomore speedster had six receptions for 133 yards and two touchdowns.

Schultz broke the 1,000-yard barrier last week, but his eight catches for 125 yards surpassed the school record of 1,083 yards for a season. He is also the leading receiver in the NAIA with with more than 1,100 yards

Ottawa broke several season records Saturday.

The Ottawa defense kept the Swedes out of the end until the fourth quarter. That score broke an 11-quarter scoreless streak.

The Braves also had good days on special teams. The kickoff coverage was the best it has been all season.

Kicker Casey Wieder, who won his starting position back, made field goals of 37 and 46 yards in the first half. He also was successful on all five point after touchdown attempts.

Fielding Brenner led the defensive charge with eight tackles and a 36-yard interception return for a touchdown. Senior linebackers Casey Calhoun and Ross Diehl along with linebacker Art Rubio had seven stops each.

Ottawa had four sacks to up its NAIA leading total to 38.5.
