James A. Bien, 58, Ottawa, died Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2013, at Olathe Medical Center.    

A funeral mass is planned for 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 25, 2013, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ottawa. Friends may pay their respects to Mr. Bien after 1 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 24, 2013, at Dengel & Son Mortuary. A rosary will be said 6:30 p.m. Sunday, followed by family and friends visitation from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Cremation will follow services. Inurnment will be at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Ottawa.

He was born Sunday, Sept. 19, 1954, in Ottawa, the son of Leroy and Jeanette (Slaby) Bien.

James was a lifelong Ottawa resident.

He graduated from Ottawa High School with the class of 1972.

On May 21, 1982, James was united in marriage with Nancy Rutledge in Ottawa. She survives of the home.

James was a butcher for 40 years. He was employed by Waymire’s Grocery in Ottawa and Olathe; Apple Market in Ottawa; and most recently was working for Country Mart in Ottawa since the mid-1990s.

He was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church; Knights of Columbus Council 3018 and fourth degree member of Assembly 3088, Paola. He also was a former member of the Aerie Lodge No. 2700, Fraternal Order of Eagles.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Leroy and Jeanette Bien; and brother, Rick Bien.

Survivors include his wife, Nancy Bien, of the home; two daughters, Chelsea Carey and her husband Nick, and Sofie Bien, both of Ottawa; son, Camden Bien, of the home; grandchildren, Landon and Macie Carey; three brothers, Tim Bien and his wife, Rosemary, Pomona, Aaron Bien and his wife, Cindy, Olathe, and Charles Bien and his wife, Frida, Sacramento, Calif.; and sister, Bonnie Coffman and her husband, Carl, Wellsville.

The family suggests memorial contributions to Sacred Heart Catholic School or Franklin County Cancer Foundation through Dengel & Son Mortuary, 235 S. Hickory St., Ottawa KS 66067.
