ROSSVILLE — The sub-state semifinal between West Franklin and Wellsville was a beauty Saturday in Rossville.

The two county rivals waged a three-set thriller with Wellsville winning 24-26, 25-22, 27-25.

“It was a see-saw battle all the way,” Wellsville coach Eric Evans said. “Both teams played their hearts out and didn’t leave anything on the floor, and both crowds made the place an incredibly exciting place to be.”

Wellsville lost to Silver Lake (25-11, 25-7) in the finals.

“They are an excellent team with a Division I player and it showed,” Evans said. “It wasn’t quite the way we wanted to end our season, but all-in-all it was an incredibly successful season.”

Wellsville knocked off KC Christian (25-14, 25-7) in the first round. The Falcons beat Oskaloosa (25-16, 25-10).

“Our first match against KC Christian went well,” Evans said. “We were nervous to start but soon hit our stride.”

The Falcons finished 30-7, while Wellsville was 31-9.

“I am so proud of the team and their accomplishments this year, but I’m most proud of the way they came together as a team this year. It really was an amazing thing to watch, much less coach,” Evans said. “I really don’t think things like this happen without great leadership, and our three seniors Justine Dougan, Ashley Ebeck, and Chrissy Swafford provided that.”

Ashley Sparks: 27 kills, 2.31 serve-receive, 18 digs.

Karly Patton: 24 kills, 7 stuff blocks, 4 aces.

Emily Newhouse: 62 assists.

Ashley Ebeck: 2.35 serve-receive, 25 digs.

“After playing Louisburg on Tuesday, we were able to make some slight changes in preparation for the match,” Ottawa coach Laura Jeannin said. “The girls came ready to play and worked hard the entire match. Louisburg was able to take control of both sets and finished strong. I am very proud of the fight and intensity the girls played with.”
