Michael Wayne Burgoon, 62, Kansas City, Mo., formerly of Osawatomie, died Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2013, at his home.

Services are planned for 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 18, 2013, at the funeral home, followed by burial in the Lane Cemetery. Visitation is 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 17, 2013, at the Eddy-Birchard Funeral Home.

Michael was born Feb. 17, 1950, in Paola. He was the younger of two children born to Wayne A. “Buck” Burgoon and Betty Marie (Corbet) Burgoon.

The family moved to Osawatomie, and Michael graduated from Osawatomie High School in the class of 1968.

He joined the U.S. Army in 1969 and was stationed in Korea. He was discharged in 1975.

He then worked at the Osawatomie State Hospital as a Licensed Mental Health Tech II, the youngest appointed in the state of Kansas at age 27. He helped open Rainbow Mental Health in Kansas City, Kan. He then went to Johnson County Community College in Overland Park and on to MIT in New York City, where he took his career into interior design. Michael lived in New York City from 1980 to 1992. He worked for Thomas Britt, NYC, where he did interior design. In 1992, Michael moved back to Kansas City and began working for JFG Inc.  

He was a volunteer for Good Samaritan Project in Kansas and was a lobbyist for Kansas City, Mo. in Washington, D.C., in 1995.

Michael was preceded in death by his partner, Frank Pistey in 2001; his mother, Betty, died in 2008; and father, Wayne in 2000.

Survivors include his sister, Ramona Kay Jones, Paola; and other relatives and friends.
