HUMBOLDT — The Wellsville High School girls basketball team battled to a one-point lead in the fourth quarter, but could not hold off Fredonia Wednesday in a first round sub-state game in Humboldt.

Fredonia used a late surge to down the Eagles, 53-39.

“We had our chance,” Wellsville coach Brock Campbell said. “We had a couple of minute bad stretch. We were ahead with five minutes left. We could not get anything going the rest of the game.”

The game was tight until the final few minutes when Fredonia hit shots and salted away the game at the line.

“It was disappointing,” Campbell said. “We played pretty well for most of the game.”

Wellsville (7-14) was paced by Moriah Kayhill with 15 points.

Fredonia (53) — Baker 17, Tindle 13, Finley 12, Shay 4, Couch 2, Plummer 2, Robinson 3.

Wellsville (39) — Kayhill 15, Cunningham 4, McTaggart 7, Bonzo 4, Newhouse 3, Geist 2, Sparks 2, Strawn 2.
