General Edward Hand Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution met 9:30 a.m. March 9, 2013, at Ransom Memorial Hospital. Members present were Regent Elaine Oakleaf, Chaplain Harma McKenzie, Emily Kirkpatrick, Betty Wittmeyer, Barbara Dew, Barbara Netherland and Lorene Christin.

Regent Elaine received the Credentials Packet for the NSDAR Continental Congress to be June 26-30 in Washington, D.C. Vice Regent Dee Ellen Kruzel is an automatic delegate. Lorene Christin was designated as the voting delegate for the chapter.

Regent Elaine announced that the Captain Jesse Leavenworth Chapter plans to publish a KSDAR recipe book and is requesting submissions of recipes, original artwork and family stories. Elaine plans to submit a recipe that has been in her family for several generations and invited other members to do the same. Deadline is June 30, 2013.

The Marais des Cygnes Chapter is hosting a luncheon May 4, 2013, at the Paola Country Club (cost $10) and is inviting several nearby chapters to attend. State Regent Mary Frisch will be the guest of honor; reservations required by April 15, 2013.

Children of the American Revolution (CAR) President Alexandra Frisch reported the goal for funds to vaccinate all dogs belonging to the 11 cottages at Crossnore School has been reached.

Emily Kirkpatrick reported that a Webinar titled “My Application Goes to Washington, D.C.” will be presented March 26. It follows a DAR application from the mail room to the board room, showing the complete process for membership.

Betty Wittmeyer, chair of the American Indian committee, reported many accomplishments of the committee, including 22 chapters with Indian programs and nine proclamations, including one from the governor of Kansas.

Treasurer Barbara Dew gave her report, which was approved as read. Secretary Lorene suggested that minutes of each meeting be emailed to members. The reading of the February minutes was tabled; a vote will be taken regarding the suggested distribution.

Regent Elaine and Barbara Netherland gave an interesting report on Elizabeth Burgin of New York City. Burgin helped 200 prisoners escape from boats in the New York harbor where they were held in horrible conditions. A reward was offered for her capture but she escaped, although all her possessions were confiscated. Later, she was given a pension for her assistance to American revolutionaries. Fort Green Park, New York City, is the site of a mass grave holding more than 11,000 American prisoners.

Chaplain Harma’s devotional cited 31 days of March as days of thanks. There are five events to celebrate during March; Harma presented a prayer given by St. Patrick. The meeting adjourned at 10:35 a.m. Brunch was shared at Old 56 Restaurant.
