At its meeting Monday night, Ottawa city commissioners voted 5-0 to execute an agreement with the Kansas Department of Transportation to participate in the federal fund exchange program.
The program allows the city to use federal highway funds on local street projects, Richard Nienstedt, city manager, explained to commissioners. Ottawa is eligible for $119,109.96, which Nienstedt said would cover a portion of the city’s street overlay project completed this summer.
City commissioners voted 5-0 in June to approve Ottawa-based Killough Construction Inc.’s low bid of $261,174.30 to undertake seven mill and overlay street improvement projects, which were completed this summer. If it so chooses, the city could cover nearly half that cost with available federal dollars.
