1. Keim Bakery’s Burgers — The bakery, located at 304 S. Main St., Ottawa, has several award-winning burger options to suit diners’ tastes. The restaurant also features daily lunch and dinner meals, starting with spaghetti and meatballs, healthful chicken options and every Friday it plans to feature something or someone special. This Friday is Mexican food made with one of the employee’s traditional family recipes. The bakery also is adding to the baking and pastry menu by focusing on more German-style pastries including the popular bienen stich (bee sting), and traditional apple and cherry strudels.
2. South Beach Cove’s Extreme Nachos — The extreme nachos featured at South Beach Cove, 1608 S. Main St., Ottawa, include tortilla chips piled high with grilled chicken breast, tomatoes, onions, jalapeños, homemade salsa and smothered with a blend of Monterey Jack and cheddar cheese. The nachos could be ordered as an appetizer or as a complete meal and pairs well with one the restaurant’s signature drinks, like the Shark Attack.
3. Old 56 Family Restaurant’s Pies — There seems to be no end to the selection of pies at Old 56 Family Restaurant, 2227 S. Princeton St., Ottawa. The diner offers more than a dozen pies at any given time, homemade by Golden Boy Pies in Overland Park. A specialty pie is featured at the restaurant each month, including sugar-free options.
4. Nana’s Fudge-N-Stuff’s Sweets — Fudges, chocolates, cookies and baked goods always are popular items at Nana’s Fudge-N-Stuff, 113 E. 11th St., Ottawa. Gift trays wrapped in ribbon can be specially ordered from the confectionery, and sweets also can be purchased by the piece or by the pound.
5. Smoked Creations BBQ Burrito — Touted as a monster of a burrito by the boys at Smoked Creations BBQ, 306 S. Main St., Ottawa, this creation is packed with rice, black beans, pulled pork, sour cream, jalapeños, onions, pickles, lettuce, fresh pico de gallo and barbecue sauce, all stuffed inside a 14-inch tortilla. The burrito also can be ordered deep fried and may be paired with an appetizer of loaded potato crisps and finished with filled donut bites for dessert. The restaurant offers lunch specials during the week and burnt ends on special Friday nights and weekends.
7. Pizza Time Pizza — Pizza Time, serving up pizza in Ottawa since 1985, offers an all-you-can-eat pizza and salad bar that is difficult to beat at the downtown location, 208 S. Main St., Ottawa. The buffet lunch special runs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily during the week, giving patrons the option to select from a variety of toppings or request a pizza of their choice. The restaurant also serves sandwiches, wings and desserts.
8. El Sol Mexican Restaurant’s Fajitas — El Sol fajitas feature a combination of grilled chicken, grilled steak and shrimp, made with green peppers and onions and served in a sizzling skillet with flour tortillas, lettuce, guacamole, pico de gallo, sour cream, beans and rice. The Mexican restaurant, 210 S. Main St., Ottawa, also offers other signature El Sol items like the shrimp dish Cammarones El Sol, which includes grilled stuffed shrimp wrapped in bacon. Such desserts as a traditional flan can conclude a meal, or something more flamboyant like a chocolate volcano could hit the spot.
9. Bella Cucina’s Desserts — Tiramisu and carrot cake are among the signature desserts available to enjoy at the Italian restaurant, 129 S. Main St., Ottawa. Even if looking to order just a slice or dessert platter, Bella Cucina can accommodate the order. The downtown restaurant also offers catering and will craft just about any style of cuisine from Italian to Chinese or a fusion of the two. Special bakery orders of cinnamon rolls, cakes, pies and more can be made at the restaurant.
10. Pome on the Range’s Wine — Blackberry wine combined with mulling spice, is among several wines offered at Pome on the Range Orchards and Winery, 2050 Idaho Road, Williamsburg. Whether buying for a holiday party or included in a gift basket for someone special, the seasonal wine sets the mood for the season.
11. Guy & Mae’s Tavern Ribs — The barbecue at Guy & Mae’s Tavern has been a community staple for nearly 40 years at 119 W. William St., Williamsburg. The hickory-smoked pork ribs are cooked for several hours and served to customers on The Ottawa Herald newspaper. The family-owned business continues to offer the well-known food and atmosphere to the barbecue faithful, who flock from near and far to enjoy a taste of tradition.
12. Buzzards Pizza — The generously topped pizzas at Buzzards Pizza, 410 E. Franklin St., Pomona, keep customers coming back for more. A blend of provolone, mozzarella and cheddar cheeses can be combined with toppings like meat lovers or specialties like buffalo pizza topped with ground bison meat from Franklin County.
