Members of the Ottawa Suzuki Strings — a musical institute of young violinists, violists and cellists — are hoping to have a little more jingle in their step this holiday season. And not just because Christmas is coming.
They have been sighted playing all over the city in an attempt to promote their latest CD, sell tickets for their coming Christmas concert and raise money for the program.
The CD, “Ribbons and Bows,” is the group’s fourth and features nearly 75 musicians playing traditional Christmas tunes like “Sleigh Ride,” “The First Noel” and “Go Tell It On the Mountain.”
Alice Joy Lewis, the institute’s founder and director, said the album was produced in July and took four days of hard-core recording in the Ottawa University Chapel to create.
“It’s remarkable what those students can do,” Lewis said. “Putting together a CD is a major amount of work. They were standing for long amounts of time on their feet and playing sections again and again, but I think nearly every one of them would say they’d do it again in a minute.”
She said the group already has sold several hundred copies of the album. Last Saturday, eight Strings players braved the cold weather and played at Wal-Mart to sell CDs.
Theresa Meyerkorth’s son, Riley, is 5 years old and has been playing the violin with the Strings for two years. Riley played in the song “Jingle Bells,” which also is featured on the CD.
“He loves to play violin, and he loves his teacher,” Meyerkorth said. “We’re just lucky enough to live in an area where he can have that kind of music education.”
The CD costs $16 and is available for purchase at the Suzuki Strings Institute at the Carnegie Cultural Center, 515 S. Main St.; Cornerstone Bookstore, 217 S. Main St.; the Franklin County Visitors Center, 2011 E. Logan St.; and the Old Depot Museum, 135 W. Tecumseh St. The album also will be sold after the Ottawa Christmas parade at Sutton’s Jewelry, 207 S. Main. St.
The group will perform again 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Ottawa Wal-Mart and 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Louisburg Cider Mill, 14730 K-68, on playing carols and selling CDs and tickets for its Dec. 4 Christmas concert.
Concert tickets are $7 in advance and $10 at the door. The concert will be 7 p.m. Dec. 4 at Ottawa Municipal Auditorium, Third and Hickory streets. Tickets are available in advance at the Suzuki Strings Institute, Cornerstone Bookstore, the Franklin County Visitors Center, the Old Depot Museum and the Ottawa Municipal Auditorium.
