Ellen C. Hickman, 104, Ottawa, died Monday, January 7, 2013 at Ottawa Retirement Village.
Cremation is planned with graveside services 10:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 11, 2013, at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Ottawa. Inurnment is set for Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
She was born Saturday, Nov. 14, 1908, in Kansas City, Missouri, the daughter of Aloysious and Agnes (Levell) Oestreicher.
She has been a resident of Ottawa since 1946, moving from Princeton, Kan.
Ellen graduated from Princeton High School with the class of 1927 and graduated in 1930 from nurse’s training at St. Mary’s Hospital in Kansas City,
Mo.
She worked as a nurse, in hospitals, private nursing and then as a school nurse from age 55 until retiring at 65. During her retirement, she was employed as a nurse at Cedar House and Crestview Nursing Homes in Ottawa.
Ellen was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and Ottawa Women’s Bowling Association where she had the highest bowling average from 1949 to 1954. She was an avid flower gardener, fisherman and card player.
On Saturday, Aug. 13, 1932, Ellen was united in marriage with John S. Hickman in Kansas City, Mo. He preceded her in death Nov. 12, 1980.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Aloysious and Agnes Oestreicher; sisters Georgia Berry and Barbara Isaeff; and brother, Grover Oestreicher.
Survivors include her daughters, Barbara Carpenter and husband, Bob, Gardner; Patricia Harris and husband, Chuck, Huntington Beach, Calif.; son, Tom Hickman and wife, Barb, Ottawa; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
