Julia R. Bennett, 98, Ottawa, died Sunday, Oct. 14, 2012.
Funeral Services are planned for 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 19, 2012, at Dengel & Son Mortuary. Friends may pay their respects to Mrs. Bennett from 9 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 18, 2012, to the service hour at Dengel & Son Mortuary, where the family will meet with friends 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday. Interment will be at Highland Cemetery, Ottawa.
She was born Saturday, Oct. 18, 1913, in Franklin County, the daughter of Earnest LaGrange and Eva May (Smith) Hume.
Julia was a near-lifelong Franklin County resident. She lived with her husband, Harold, in Independence from 1939 to 1942; Pittsburg, 1942 to 1954; and Newton, 1954 to 1959; moving back to Ottawa in 1959, where she made her home until her death.
Julia graduated from Ottawa High School with the class of 1931 and attended Kansas State Teachers College of Emporia, where she received her teaching certificate.
She was a homemaker and taught school five years in Franklin County. She also was a teller for 17 and a half years with Anchor Savings, retiring in 1976.
Julia was a member of the First United Methodist Church where she was involved in Outreach Circle. She was a past president of Business & Professional Women and participated in Sequel Club, Four Seasons Garden Club and Ransom Memorial Ladies Auxiliary where she volunteered 15 years in the gift shop. She volunteered her services for 33 years at Friends of the Library, where she helped at the bookstore, and was a Franklin County Election Board worker for many years.
Her greatest love and joy was spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She also enjoyed playing bridge and was a passionate fan of University of Kansas Men’s basketball.
On May 25, 1937, Julia was united in marriage to Harold R. Bennett in Franklin County. He preceded her in death May 27, 2011.
She also is preceded in death by her parents; and brother, Harley Hume.
Surviving family members include a daughter, Sharon Kay Underwood, Ottawa; granddaughter, Barb J. Wells and husband, A.R., Lawrence; grandson, Kyle Underwood, Denver; great-grandchildren, Vaughn and Keira Wells, Lawrence; and many nieces and nephews.
The family suggests memorial contributions to First United Methodist Church through Dengel & Son Mortuary, 235 S. Hickory St., Ottawa KS 66067.
