Lois J. Hawley, 83, Ottawa, died Monday, Nov. 12, 2012, at Ottawa Retirement Village in Ottawa.
Memorial services are planned for 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, 2012, at Dengel & Son Mortuary. Cremation is planned. The family will meet with friends from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 16, 2012, at Dengel & Son Mortuary. Inurnment will be at Dean Cemetery.
She was born Monday, Nov. 26, 1928, in Kansas City, Mo., the daughter of William Carter and Florence Retta (Davis) Barkley.
She was a lifelong resident of Franklin County.
Lois attended Williamsburg schools through the 11th grade and graduated from Appanoose High School with the class of 1946; finished nurse’s aide training in 1970 and was certified as a Medical Aide in late 1970.
Lois worked three years as a pie baker and cook at the L&L Café in Ottawa, five years at Brookside Manor Nursing Home in Overbrook and 16 years, along with her husband, for USD 497 in Lawrence as custodian, retiring in 1994. After her retirement, she worked as a caregiver.
She was a member of First Baptist Church in Ottawa.
On Sunday, May 19, 1946, Lois was united in marriage with Alvin “Bud’ Houston at Olathe. He preceded her in death April 26, 2003. On April 9, 2004, she married Allen Hawley. He preceded her in death Dec. 24, 2006.
She is preceded in death by her first husband, Bud Houston; second husband, Allen Hawley; great-grandson, Antonio Nathaniel Correa; parents, W.C and Florence Barkley; infant sister, Judith Ann Barkley; and sister, Sharon Kay Baer.
Survivors include three sons, Alvin Francis Houston Jr. and his wife, Ann, Williamsburg, Marion William Houston, Ottawa, and Edward Lee Houston and his wife, Sandra, Chicago, Ill.; two daughters, Elizabeth “Joy” Foushee and her husband, Eddie, Ottawa, and Deborah Sue Curtis and her husband, Jeff, Chanute, brother, William “Bob” Robert Barkley, Pomona, 18 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.
The family suggests memorial contributions to Franklin County Cancer Foundation or Vitas Hospice through Dengel & Son Mortuary, 235 S. Hickory St., Ottawa KS 66067.
