Zelma Irene Van Horn, 78, Ottawa, died Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2012, at Wellsville Retirement Community, Wellsville.
Funeral services are planned for 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 13, 2012, at Dengel & Son Mortuary. Friends may pay their respects to Mrs. Van Horn 9 a.m. Wednesday to the service hour at Dengel & Son Mortuary, where the family will meet with friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday. Interment will be at Highland Cemetery, Ottawa.
She was born Oct. 31, 1934, in Ottawa, the daughter of Fred and Myrtle (Baldwin) Proffitt.
Zelma was a lifelong Ottawa resident.
She graduated from Ottawa High School with the class of 1952 and attended Ottawa University for one and a half years.
On Jan. 31, 1954, Zelma was united in marriage to Dale Van Horn in Ottawa. He survives of the home.
Zelma was a homemaker and also worked for USD 289 as a cook for more than 17 years, retiring in 2000.
She was a member of the Rantoul Presbyterian Community Church; past member of New Hope Baptist Church, Wellsville, where she served as financial secretary and ABW; EHU Peoria Plotters; past project leader for Full-of-Pep 4-H Club; Franklin County Farm Bureau Women’s Committee; Power of the Past; Red Hats and Friday Quilters.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Myrtle Proffitt.
Survivors include her husband, Dale Van Horn, Ottawa; three sons, Jeffery Van Horn and wife, Robbyn, Baldwin City, Gene Van Horn and wife, Sharon, Wellsville, and Ted Van Horn, Garfield; a daughter, Pam Van Horn, Manhattan; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
The family suggests memorial contributions to Kansas 4-H Foundation or Franklin County Cancer Foundation through Dengel & Son Mortuary, 235 S. Hickory St., Ottawa KS 66067.
