Carla Maureen (Platt) James departed this life Dec. 8, 2012.
Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 13, 2012, at First Church of the Nazarene, 1001 SW Buchanan St.
Carla was born Oct. 7, 1949, in Spring Hill, Kan., to Robert and Annabelle (Platt) Pence.
She was preceded in death by her stepfather, Robert Pence, and brother, Robert Platt.
She married Larry. R. James Dec. 7, 1984, in Topeka, Kan.
Carla attended Ottawa University earning a degree in business administration.
She worked for Community Action from 1987 to 1997. She later worked as a finance manager for Topeka Independent Living Resource Center until she retired in 2010.
She was an active member of the Soroptimist International-Topeka, serving as president (2005 - 2010), vice president in 2004 and was currently serving as treasurer. Carla also served as chair of the Women’s Opportunity Award, Membership and Community Service Committees.
Carla was instrumental in starting the SI-Topeka’s Feeding Families classes, which help low-income families learn basic cooking skills and was recognized as the SI-Topeka Member of the Year in 2002 and 2003.
Carla was an amazing wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin and friend. She leaves to cherish her memory, her husband, Larry James; children, Randall and (stepchildren) Troy, Talya, Tara (Ashley), Trevin, (Misty), Trenton (Julie), Trevor (Crystal), Toiya and Todd; and 29 grandchildren. She also leaves a brother, Randall Platt; step-brothers, Bruce Pence and Steve Pence; step-sister, Cynthia (Pence) McLean (Fred); and a host of nieces and nephews.
Bowser-Johnson Funeral Chapel, Topeka, Kan., is in charge of the service.
