Officers from the Ottawa Police Department and Franklin County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a gunshot wound to a child at 12:29 p.m. Friday and found the 4-year-old boy had suffered a gunshot wound to the leg in a residence at 1100 block of North Oak Street, Dennis Butler, Ottawa police chief, said Friday afternoon.
“The child was treated at the scene by Franklin County paramedics and transported by ground [ambulance] to a Kansas City area hospital,” Butler said. “The wound does not appear to be life-threatening at this time.”
A man was taken into custody and a handgun was recovered, police said. Capt. Adam Weingartner, of the Ottawa police, said at 2 p.m. the person in custody had not been charged with a crime at the time.
“We are still in the interviewing process,” Weingartner said.
The child’s mother was home at the time of the incident, Weingartner said.
He declined to provide more details about the shooting or the man being held for questioning because of the ongoing investigation.
The boy was conscious and appeared to be suffering from a wound to the left leg when paramedics carried him from the home to a waiting ambulance at 12:43 p.m.
