The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office responded 10:39 p.m. Wednesday to a report of a shooting in the 1100 block of Vermont Terrace, rural Franklin County, near Rantoul, Richards, Franklin County sheriff, said. A 52-year-old male victim was transported from the scene by Franklin County Emergency Medical Services.
Neither the victim’s identity nor a motive for the shooting had been released Friday afternoon. The victim’s condition also was unavailable.
Jacob Leach, 32, Rantoul, was arrested 3:24 a.m. Thursday on suspicion of aggravated assault and aggravated battery in connection with the shooting, Richards said midday Thursday. Leach is being held at the Franklin County Adult Detention Center, 305 S. Main St., Ottawa, and is set to appear 10 a.m. Monday in Franklin County District Court for his initial court appearance.
Though the shooting occurred at the victim’s home on Vermont Terrace, the incident apparently began elsewhere, Richards said.
“Part of it happened at another location while they were out driving,” Richards said, indicating shots might have been fired before the victim was struck at his home.
“This is not a random type crime that occurred,” Richard said.
Members of the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, Kansas Highway Patrol, Ottawa Police Department and Miami County Sheriff’s Office were involved in the investigation and search for the suspect. Miami County was called because the incident was close to the county line, Richards said, while the highway patrol was available because a deputy was helping with the Franklin County Fair. Members of the Ottawa Police Department aided because there was potential for an armed and dangerous suspect, he said.
