A 2-year-old boy and a 6-month-old boy were taken into protective custody by police Wednesday, Ottawa Police Capt. Adam Weingartner said, after the 2-year-old was discovered by a resident at the intersection of Fifth and Mulberry streets. The resident called 911 and held onto the child until police arrived on the scene, he said.
During the subsequent investigation, police identified the child and found the 6-month-old infant in the house where the 2-year-old boy had wandered off from in the 500 block of South Sycamore Street, Weingartner said.
“An adult roommate was in the house sleeping when the 2-year-old walked away from the home,” Weingartner said, who added the roommate was not considered to be a suspect in the case. “The father, who was not at the home when the 2-year-old walked away, returned after he was contacted by telephone.”
Justin L. Voegeler was arrested Wednesday by police on suspicion of endangering a child, Weingartner said.
Voegeler remained in the Franklin County Adult Detention Center, 305 S. Main St., Ottawa, late Wednesday afternoon, awaiting a court appearance.
A resident first reported seeing a child walking in the street shortly after 9 a.m., but that search by officers did not reveal the child’s whereabouts, Weingartner said.
“... A second citizen called [later] and found a child in the street at the intersection of Fifth and Mulberry,” Weingartner said.
